Sunshine = ££££

On sunny days, the Isle of Wight produces more energy than it consumes, yet the current energy infrastructure doesn’t maximize the use of this solar potential.

If this project succeeds, the Isle of Wight will become entirely energy self-sufficient, leading to lower energy costs for residents and a minimized carbon footprint since the energy will be sourced 100% from renewables. This shift will also usher in several ancillary benefits, such as enhanced mobility services, possibly through complimentary electric vehicles, and notable improvements in citizen well-being. These improvements encompass reduced fuel poverty rates, comfortably heated homes, and enhanced digital and real-world connectivity.

However, it’s crucial to understand that the initial incentives and strategies to alter public behavior might not be as impactful as anticipated. The criteria for success will require ongoing assessment, acknowledging that what’s deemed optimal behavior today may not align with tomorrow’s standards.

A Phased Approach

This initiative is a journey that unfolds in distinct phases. We’re currently in phase one, the feasibility study. The insights gained from this study will guide phase two, the development of a proof of concept, which we anticipate will span at least two years. This will set the stage for phase three: a comprehensive, privately-funded commercial rollout across the island, projected to receive the green light in roughly four years.

Outlined below are vital components that will power this innovative energy service. The primary components emphasize citizen engagement, energy trading, and energy grid management. Complementing these are secondary components, which include the sensing data infrastructure and actuation control framework.

Entelligently

The citizen engagement component has crucial functions to fulfill. Its primary role is to guide customers toward optimal choices by providing relevant information and encouraging specific behaviors. This functionality is delivered through KnowNow Information’s existing web app, Entelligently. This platform gauges users’ sentiments and communicates with them using targeted ‘smart nudge’ prompts. It’s worth noting that as voice-controlled systems become more prevalent, users will be able to interact with Entelligently vocally.

Additionally, Entelligently integrates various data sources, blending user input with sensor data on energy consumption from homes and businesses. This is further combined with local weather data. This fusion of data allows Entelligently to make predictions tailored to individual communities and users. The platform also interfaces seamlessly with the energy trading platform, updating it with achieved comfort thresholds and recognizing any nudges that need to be implemented.

Lumenaza

The energy trading platform is facilitated by a system from Lumenaza. This platform evaluates the total energy supply and demand every 30 minutes, determining the most economically viable use of the generated energy. The aim is to optimize both economic returns and energy utilization throughout the day. It assesses whether the energy should be used immediately or stored for future use.

Lumenaza seamlessly integrates with the island’s energy management system. It has the power to decide whether the energy is used immediately, stored for later, or left unutilized. By creating a marketplace for energy exchange, it allows energy producers to trade with industry demand. This system not only facilitates energy exchange but also enables a monetary transaction. The revenues generated can contribute to operational costs and offer subsidies to consumers in need.

New Tech Infrastructure & Role

The sensor and actuation infrastructure are secondary technical components that still require further understanding. During this phase, it’s crucial to outline the cybersecurity model to be implemented, as it will determine the capabilities of sensors and actuators. Additionally, the IT infrastructure’s resilience, availability, and control requirements need to be clarified. The subsequent phase will involve selecting the appropriate technology infrastructure and verifying if it meets the necessary requirements.

A novel role, tasked with safeguarding digital assets and the data generated, will be introduced. This role will extend beyond just overseeing infrastructure; the primary value lies in the data and the subsequent automation possibilities that emerge, necessitating continual management.

Cheaper Energy on the IoW

For KnowNow, the goals are multifaceted. This initiative presents an excellent opportunity to test alternative applications for Entelligently. We’re also thrilled about our collaborations with esteemed organizations, including the Universities of Portsmouth and Newcastle, EON, Lumenaza, and the Isle of Wight council and community. Our strengthening partnership with the University of Portsmouth complements our smart cities consulting on PAS 181 – Information Marketplaces.
