Joseph with David celebrating a successful work experience!

Hi, I’m Joe and I have been gifted with the opportunity of working with KnowNow for a week.
I am 15 and I love computers and programming. For my Work Experience I was delighted to know that KnowNow were happy to take me on.

In school we had been had been using tools such as Raspberry Pi‘s to create our own minecraft servers.
I also was part of a club of programmers in our school. We use languages such as HTML and CSS to provide more online applications for teachers.

Review of KnowNows Rollercoaster 2016

What a Year! What a Ride!

2016 was a very interesting year from KnowNow’s perspective.   We made a decision to pivot, we won some battles, lost some skirmishes and we have made some customers very happy.     We also had to say goodbye to some old friends too.  As Dave & I both said to each other at our end of year review  “it has been a rollercoaster of a year!”.

Security Rules of Thumb from KnowNow

Police Line do not cross

Data Security is essential

Why do I need security in the first place?

Your data is being used by many organisations and yet you have minimal control.   Sometimes the data used will benefit you.   Sometimes it will be for the benefit of others.   The balance is starting to shift in our ever connected world where the gains of giving away your data are not as clear cut as they used to be.  Now we have more risks to worry about, more threats to manage and yet even more benefit to be enjoyed if we did share our information.

Threats are out there…..

ComputerWeekly LogoKnowNow is one of just a few companies at the forefront of dealing with data in a manner that is suitable to the IoT – Clive Longbottom, July 2015

There is an excellent article published on ComputerWeekly.com today written by Clive Longbottom. Clive came to IBM Hursley last week on the day that our BeatHouse demonstration was installed in their IoT laboratory.

IoT and BeatHouse from KnowNow

This week we have been setting up a demonstration of our BeatHouse service at the IBM Internet of Things (IoT) lab in Hursley, Winchester. It will be used by ourselves and IBM to demonstrate how you can use their suite of technologies to rapidly develop new services using real-time information.

What is BeatHouse anyway?

BeatHouse - Grand Prix analytics for your home

BeatHouse – Grand Prix analytics for your home

BeatHouse is our name for a home monitoring and actuation system that allows you to automate the control of heat and energy throughout your home. Sensors measure the temperatures in various spaces and signals are sent to vents that allow the heat to be efficiently shared.

The name BeatHouse comes from the initial deployment – a new build home being built in the middle of the South Downs National Park. It is replacing the old police house that stood in it’s place, hence the name. You can watch video of the original house being demolished here.

The new BeatHouse is being built to Passivhaus specifications which means that it will be highly insulated. It will only take 4 towel rails and the heat from its occupants to provide all of the heat that will be required. This has made it the perfect location for us to test our sensor technologies.

So how does BeatHouse from KnowNow Information work?

What makes a Smart City?

Or….5 things you need to do first

Having just come back to the UK from a smart cities conversation on the other side of the world, I would like to share some thoughts.   The role of KnowNow is to prepare the IT architectural blueprint for this new smart place.   In effect create the wiring and usage diagram of where IT will be deployed and how it will be used. As much as you have an architectural blueprint for a plot to be built showing the materials and measurements.   The IT infrastructure needs similar design outputs to ensure that the IT works as required, when required for the right person.

Know Now Press Release: BeatHouse Service Launched

BeatHouse by KnowNow Information Ltd

PRESS RELEASE

KnowNow Information to launch ‘smart’ domestic energy management system at Eco Technology Show, Brighton

  • Brings level of data analysis benefits found in grand prix motor racing to domestic space and water heating management
  • Reflects rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) technology
  • First installation to be in super-insulated, new-build ‘Beat House’ project in Hampshire conservation area

Eco Technology Show, 11-12 June 2015, Amex Stadium, Brighton, East Sussex, UK

KnowNow Information Ltd., Stand E36

Portsmouth, Hampshire – June 10, 2015 – For immediate release:

A new domestic energy management system, designed to minimise space and hot water heating costs throughout the home by using motor racing style data analysis methods and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, is to be launched by its designers, KnowNow Information, at the Eco Technology exhibition in Brighton, June 11-12, Stand E36.

The first system will be installed in Beathouse a new home being built now within a Hampshire conservation area. Constructed with highly insulated factory-made panels, the four-bedroom dwelling will only require four towel rails to heat it. The monthly energy bill calculated by using the Government’s Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) is around £70 but with KnowNow’s system, total energy costs are expected to be far lower.

Space heating of rooms is anticipated to require minimal energy and to prove the point the house will be closely monitored in real time using the KnowNow system. The system incorporates advanced sensing devices from a global manufacturer of energy monitoring technology, and data analysis resources from IBM Bluemix, a leading cloud-based internet services platform.

A short presentation about the new system and its first application in the house in Hampshire will be given at the Eco Technology Show 2015 by Chris Cooper, chief technical officer of KnowNow Information. It will take place on day one (Thursday June 11th) in the Innovation Zone at 10:40 hrs.
